On a partially cloudy day it’s always a hard choice whether to focus on the sky or on the ground. If you’re quick enough you might catch something worth painting in both. But, I think I rushed the clouds in these studies because I was worried that the shafts of light that were making the ground so beautiful would disappear. I really wanted a chance at them. I wonder how they would have turned out if I’d tried doing them simultaneously – switching back and forth between them as needed. I do that when I’m sketching people sometimes – in case somebody spots me glancing at them, I can quickly switch to my other model and relieve their suspicion. Might be worth an experiment sometime.
