Clouds are so frustrating to paint from life – I can never quite get the contrast between the clouds and the sky right. The sky is bright, but if you make it too bright then the highlights of the clouds don’t stand out. But make the sky too dark and you’ve got to make the clouds darker to contrast – then your lovely, gentle pastel gradients are lost. And right in the middle of trying to figure all that out your gold clouds turn pink, your pink clouds turn purple, and your purple clouds turn grey. Then you realize it’s dusk, you’re cold, and you’re going to have fight your way back through the stickers and thorns in the dark because the clouds kept you out in the field too long. Ah, but they’re so pretty – you just have to forgive them their capricious natures.
