I can fully understand now why Monet made such a thing about hay bales – they’re crazy fun to paint. I think it’s the fact that your painting gains so much without a lot of effort. A focal point, for one – in a pure nature scene, that’s often hard to find. Two, you get a perfect, simple form to show off your ability. I mean, cylinders are drawing 101 material. They catch the light in an interesting, yet predictable, easily-paintable way. And they’re a nice neutral color which means at sunset there are purples, reds and oranges galore.
I’m glad I found a nearby field that still puts out hay – and just in time for fall. Be prepared for more hay bales, because I’m planning on milking this subject for as long as I can.
