I don’t know about you, but I get pretty excited when I see dirt. I mean grass is lovely to walk on, but for a composition, it can be a little flat, green and monotonous. But find a nice little patch of dirt poking through and suddenly you get to pull out your red paints and that’s pretty exciting. Suddenly there’s lines you can work with, things you can use to draw the eye into the picture: visual interest. Fortunately, there was plenty of dirt in New Mexico – red dirt, white dirt, yellow dirt, grey dirt. And rocks and pebbles and giant desert stones galore. Lots of good things to spice up the picture plain.
