I get really excited when I see sunlit leaves. All the different shades of green – the bluish shadows, the glowing neons, the sparkling highlights. But painting a limb full of sunlit leaves is like a trust fall – you just have to just dive in hope it will resemble something in the end. You furiously dab bits of yellow, bits of blue – half the time you’re not sure if you’re painting the leaves or the trunk or the space between them, or is it the limb from the tree behind? It all kind of goes blurry in the rush to paint it all. I think there’s probably a better way to paint leaves – involving a little more planning and more careful observation, no doubt – but I haven’t quite hit on it yet.
