Stand-ins for Spring

littlebush_penandink We’ve had a few good warm weekends here in Texas, and the trees are starting to bud – but it’s not spring yet. My itch to paint something with a little more color than a grey web of branches marches on, and so I find myself focusing on any little thing that shows the least amount of vibrancy. The shrubs that grow under trees, dried yellow china berries, the grassy little hills that might well be burial grounds for how green they stay through all weathers – they’re not my idea of perfect models, but they’ll do. At least for another few weeks – fingers crossed.
