Close Ups

pleinair_gvswarmtree It’s a hard bargain to drive when a tree is as pretty on the underside as it is as a whole – if you back up enough to see the whole thing with all it’s branches, you miss all the details and variations of it’s bark, but if you zoom in close enough to see those, you end up with a lovely painting of a trunk. But these two trees just begged to be given a close up. The first tree was practically glowing with the reflected light off the lawn and after months of painting in greens and greys, it was nice to break out the reds. The knobby old tree at the bottom looked much more majestic in real life – in my waist-down rendering he somewhat resembles a tentacle monster about to wobble off the page – but, hey, I got those knots down.
