pleinair_grasshillsI think my study of trees in pen and ink has improved them in my oil paintings – I feel like I’m having an easier time getting the texture and the mass of the tree defined realistically, now that I know what details are key. I’m quicker to notice differences between individual trees – like the shifts in color temperature in their trunks, and the way the texture of their bark effects how light or dark they appear. It’s nice to feel that improvement, and I hope I’ll be able to find some different varieties of trees to study in the future, now that I know how helpful it is.
