Landscape Anatomy

landscape_sketches3 I’ve been trying to improve my sense of space and the way landscapes fit together – my landscape anatomy, so to speak. It’s just that I’m easily distracted by details and tend to lose focus on the big picture a little too easily. But I’ve noticed in my imaginative work that there’s a distinct lack of space – I always put my figures right in front and any backgrounds there might be are just afterthoughts. That’s no good. For someone who goes outside to paint so often, it doesn’t show up much in my indoor work. So, since gestures are a good way to improve human and animal anatomy, I’m hoping they’ll improve my landscape anatomy as well. I just wish I could find some wider spaces to draw in – the undeveloped lot behind my house, beloved and woodsy as it may be, only has so many vistas.
