Well, the leaves are fading fast, and the weather has been roller-coastering from balmy 70s to near freezing, so my days of painting outdoors in comfort may be numbered. I’ve been trying to get out at golden hour, when I do make it out – that lovely time right before sundown that you get those lovely oranges and blues and the long shadows.
Sometimes, though, that lovely lighting can be incredibly frustrating – you don’t realize how fast it moves until you’re trying to catch it. You put your head down to paint in a highlight and when you look up again that streak of sunlight’s gone, and something else is lit up beyond it. So do you paint the new tableau or stick to what you started with? By the time you decide, it’s on to something else!
