Well, I finally managed to get back out there with my oil paints – and I think the results are already an improvement. I’ve been looking through Kevin Macpherson’s book on painting landscapes in oil, and tried to put a few of his methods into practice. Painting in the dark masses first, then the light, then breaking those down into their variations – pretty straight forward, but it’s so easy to get overwhelmed by all the details in nature that you forget your training and start flinging paint all over the place. So a little disciplined painting has been good for me. I’m trying to vary my brush strokes and pay closer attention to color and value changes. And looking forward to when I can get a pochade box to make wrangling my paints easier.
