Last year was the first year I brought a sketchbook to the state fair – I managed to get a few sketches, but had a hard time drawing quickly enough to make anything worthwhile. This year, with a year’s worth of practice under my belt and some better materials I managed to get more out of it. I tested out a water pen filled with watered down water soluble ink on this trip, which proved to be a great tool for blocking in large areas in a hurry. We hit up the children’s barnyard, the petting zoo, the show barn and ostrich races. There were lots of curious spectators who wanted to take a peek – particularly the handlers and owner of the animals. Now I’m itching to get out to the zoo and try sketching in less crowded conditions.
