Problems with Plein Air

watercolor_backlittrees_smallSo I attempted doing a little landscape in oil the other day, and I now remember why oil is hard. My plein air technique is very hurried and sloppy, so the paints get overmixed and muddy almost immediately, and since I chronically underpack on paper towels when I hit the fields, it’s hard to get the palette clean again. Once I realized I wasn’t going to be able to save the painting that day, I decided to do a few super fast watercolor studies of the lighting to hopefully improve the painting in the studio. Unfortunately other projects stole my attention and I never went back to work on it. But, as the weather is getting beautiful outside, I have every intention to do more outdoor oil practice, so for now I’ll just call this one a start. There’s nowhere to go but up from here.oil_trees_sept
