I never had much chance to do figure or portrait drawing in school – we had one required class, but being a small school we had a hard time finding a variety of models. I’ve always admired people who could sketch people out in “the wild”, and I’ve been meaning to try my hand at it. Fortunately we spent a lot of time at the airport on our last trip and people there are usually in a hurry to sit around and wait. I still get paranoid that someone’s going to see me sketching them, which makes me a little twitchy, so I’m sure I’m quite a sight – scribbling furiously into my book, eyes darting around guiltily. But I think I’m starting to get the hang of it – at least my sketches are starting to look less like me and more like the people I’m drawing. That’s a start.
